Future Value of Architecture: Case Study of a Mid-Size, Global Design Firm as a Model for Success or as an Endangered Species

In the United States, only 2.5% of the architecture firms employ over 100 people with approximately 55 of the firms based in NYC.  This talk shall focus on one of them, SHoP Architects, to understand the context, opportunities and challenges facing a mid-size design firm and as a case study on addressing the future value of architecture firms. 

Founded nearly thirty years ago, SHoP has built a global design practice by challenging industry norms, being comfortable with risk, testing alternative business models and adapting to global market trends.  And despite creating a diverse portfolio with projects in over a dozen countries at any given time, SHoP maintains being a generalist practice with only one office, its headquarters in lower Manhattan, without private equity or M&A. 

No day is predictable, but the lessons are the value, at times even more than the immediate profit. Prior to COVID, SHoP spent five years analyzing the various succession models and in 2021 became a 100% employee-owned business.  Even with that foundation, the only certainty each day is to embrace testing methods and partnerships to tackle the uncertainty.
