Speaker Bio
James Atkins, AIA, is an architect at VMDO Architects with nearly a decade of experience designing human-centered environments for learning, creativity, and community. His work spans K-12 education, technical education, libraries, and performing arts facilities, where he brings particular sensitivity to the ways material, proportion, acoustics, and spatial sequence shape the experience of performers and audiences. This expertise is informed by a VMDO Travel Fellowship exploring aural architecture and the relationship between sound, space, and memory.
For the Emil & Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center, James helped transform an existing building into a dynamic setting for interdisciplinary learning, hands-on exploration, and career preparation. Across his work, he approaches existing conditions as opportunities to create flexible, engaging spaces that foster creativity, connection, and meaningful learning.
