Keynote Presentation: From Rights to Justice: Designing Spaces of Cultural Belonging
Our built environment is a reflection of our social values. Decisions made by architects and designers have an outside impact on who is included and who is alienated. This talk explores how lessons from Deafness and Disability can inform the design of spaces that promote cultural belonging.
Learning Objectives for the Presentation:
- Understand the Impact of Architecture on Social Values: Attendees will learn how design decisions influence who feels included or excluded within a space, and how architecture can be used to reflect and promote social equity.
- Explore Deaf-Centric and Disability-Informed Design Principles: Participants will examine how lessons from Deaf and Disabled communities can inform more inclusive design practices that prioritize cultural belonging and accessibility.
- Recognize the Role of Cultural Memory in Design: Gain insight into how connecting to cultural memory through design can foster resistance, healing, and hope for communities that have been negatively affected by the built environment.
- Identify Strategies for Inclusive Design Processes: Understand methodologies for incorporating intersectional voices and experiences into the design process to enhance community agency and trust.
