Speaker Bio
S. Maggie Schubert is the founder and principal of Chestnut Knoll Studio, a Richmond-based architecture practice focused on modern residential design rooted in craft, collaboration, and a deep connection to place. Since establishing CKS in 2019, she has guided homeowners through thoughtful, highly personal design processes that create spaces that enrich everyday life, foster lasting stewardship, and strengthen the relationship between people and the places they call home.
A graduate of Virginia Tech's School of Architecture, Maggie practiced architecture with SMBW Architects and 3north before launching her own practice. Today, her work extends beyond traditional architectural services to include owner advising, public engagement, and conversations about the future of design practice.
Maggie serves as Chair of Modern Richmond, where she leads programs that celebrate modern architecture and expand public appreciation for design across Virginia. A 2011 graduate of AIA Virginia's Emerging Leaders in Architecture program, she has served in leadership roles with both AIA Richmond and AIA Virginia, including chairing AIA Virginia's inaugural Art of Practice Conference in 2017.
Believing that great design begins with presence, curiosity, and intentional observation, Maggie completed her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2021 under Suzanne Burns at Humble Haven Yoga. She draws on principles of mindfulness in her work with clients, her leadership within the profession, and educational programs that help architects cultivate creativity, resilience, and sustainable practice.
