Discover the powerful intersection of architecture, history, and civic engagement at the University of Virginia in our seminar titled "The University of Virginia’s Design for Democracy." This session will explore how thoughtful architectural design can reflect and shape democratic values, with a focus on UVA's Memorial to Enslaved Laborers and the emerging Institute of Democracy. The discussion will delve into the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers, a transformative space that honors the legacy of those who built and sustained the university. The memorial serves as a critical lens for examining how architecture can acknowledge the past, foster reconciliation, and promote a more inclusive future.

The seminar will feature insights from key leaders in the field, including UVA’s Architect for the University Alice Raucher, and Architect Eric Höweler, who played pivotal roles in the development of the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers. Their perspectives will illuminate the challenges and opportunities in designing spaces that both reflect and influence democratic ideals—on UVA’s UNESCO site. Additionally, Melody Barnes, Executive Director of UVA’s Karsh Institute of Democracy, will discuss architecture's role in supporting the institute's mission.

Through these case studies, design principles and interactive discussions, attendees will gain insights into how architecture can serve as a powerful tool for advancing democracy, inclusivity and social justice. This seminar is ideal for architects, planners, educators and anyone interested in the role of design in fostering a more equitable society.
